Jewish Education Intern
Role Description
Hillel UW’s Jewish Education intern loves bringing people together to explore and learn more about Jewish texts, tradition and wisdom. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic about Hillel UW, love to meet and engage with fellow students, and are detail oriented. Prior participation in a JLF cohort is preferred.
Responsibilities
The Jewish Education Intern will:
- Recruit students for Hillel UW’s Jewish learning opportunities. First and foremost, to do this successfully, the intern needs to be familiar with Hillel UW’s learning opportunities. Specific recruitment efforts may include: helping staff Hillel UW’s table at Dawg Daze; additional seasonal in-person tabling on campus and at Hillel; coordination of announcements at Shabbat dinners and other Hillel UW events; writing direct emails/IG DMs to students; and shaping and executing a social media marketing plan in conjunction with Hillel staff.
- Follow up with interested students. This includes tracking students who have expressed interest in various cohorts/opportunities and determining with Hillel staff next steps to engage those students in finding a cohort that suits their interests, if applicable. This could include inviting prospective students out to coffee to get to know them better, or emailing them information about upcoming cohort-based opportunities.
- Connect with 5 new students a quarter for coffee or conversation to learn about their interests and what being Jewish means to them. While a conversation may lead to a student registering for cohort learning, the student joining a cohort is not the ultimate goal of these conversations. Rather, it is an opportunity for a student to connect with an upper class person and reflect with a peer about what it means for them to be Jewish in college.
- Participate in at least one JLF each quarter to serve as an engager, role model, and “big sib” for the JLF cohort. This includes eating dinner before sessions with students; running icebreakers at JLF sessions; leading small group discussions at JLF as needed; and hosting predetermined programming for a JLF outside of class time (e.g. an ice cream field trip or JLF Shabbat dinner).
- Perform duties related to JLF’s production. In addition, the intern will run interviews; create and monitor a WhatsApp group for announcements (including invitations to gatherings);
- Develop relationships with members of the cohort in which you are participating. Be curious about the students in the class, why they are there, and what they love about being Jewish.
- Meet weekly with the Senior Jewish Educator for supervision and mentorship, and to jointly plan the next session. During the meetings, you are encouraged to provide feedback to help shape Hillel’s educational experiences to be the best they can be! You will be responsible for jointly owning the agenda.
- Remember you are a student first! We are so grateful to work with you as Hillel UW’s Education Intern! We also recognize that you are a student too, so it is not expected that you will be in recruitment-mode all the time. We want you to attend Hillel UW programs as just a student and have fun and hang out with your own friends too!
In addition, the Jewish Education intern will:
- Be self-aware, kind, and giving.
- Respond promptly to all forms of communication from any JLF or Hillel staff.
- Arrive on time to all meetings and programs.
- Treat members of the JLF and Hillel staff with courtesy and respect.
Hours
This internship is designed for 5 hours/week with semi-flexible hours. Participation in one Jewish Learning Fellowship (or equivalent) each quarter (determined in coordination with the Senior Jewish Educator) is required but other working hours are scheduled at the intern’s discretion.
The internship includes a planning meeting with the Senior Jewish Educator in June, but the role formally starts in mid-September (before UW begins to allow for adequate planning) and runs through the end of spring quarter.
Interns will experience:
- A stronger connection to Hillel UW’s mission and people;
- Hillel staff committed to helping you succeed;
- Skills to add to your resume;
- A stipend of $1,000 per quarter, paid at the end of each quarter (December 1, March 1, and June 1). Hillel UW will withhold taxes and pay the employer portion of Social Security and Medicare taxes; and
- Dinner on JLF nights (and first dibs on leftovers!).
